New Photo Page

Received a lot of candid photos of the group in action and created a new page for them. They were taken just over the last month or so by Michael Wang (Jia's fiancee). Above on the right is Jack, who does pen and ink drawings of the whole scene. The Photo page link is in the left sidebar.

Latest Bunch of Portraits

Several portraits from over the last 2 months at the Lit on Fridays. Three hour sitting with 3 breaks. I haven't drawn too much lately and need to get semi-serious again with some good paper and practice (or a project) during the week. BONUS: photo of what they really look like!

Landscape Quarry Road

This is traveling north on Quarry Road out in Wellington, getting dark with sun setting to the left. There's a lot of good scenes out in this area. Pastel, 18x12 on Canson Mi-tientes.

Portrait Sketch

This is Steve who posed for a second time at the Lit. This turned out great with good proportions and likeness. Drawn on cheap white paper and pastel pencils.

Portrait Sketch

This is Alex, an artist and also 3D animator like myself. He's heavily into the art scene in Cleveland and Lorain. Pastel pencil on cheap white paper. I may upgrade soon.

Portrait Sketch

Can't remember this fellows name, but he's one of the many poets we've drawn on Friday. Many poets hang out at the Literary and had monthly readings staged there. A little bit of the "skinny head" here.

Portrait Sketch

Finally some new posts! This is Bob, a good likeness but another case of "skinny head". Need to check those horizontal proportions. Pastel pencil on cheap white paper. After doing quite a few in just black and white just to focus on proportions and good drawing, I'm back to getting some color in them.

Figure Drawing at Ron Johnson's Studio

This is the same model, Nikki, on separate modeling sessions, 3 to 4 sessions each on Saturday for a whopping 4 hours each session. Unfortunately we'll be taking part of the summer off from the studio.

Some New Landscapes

The Fisherman (11x14) was done a while back while the other two are recent (12x18). Park Entrance (at Horseshoe Lake) has some great color in the sunlit trees looking down North Park road. For the Catamaran it was a dreary day at Wendy Park in Ohio City.

Drawn and Quartered III

The 3rd Drawn and Quartered was held at Wall Eye Gallery on Detroit Rd featuring artists from Dr. Sketchy, NOIS Northern Ohio Illustrators Society, Tremont Pretentious Artists  and The Murray Hill Group. There were about 35 artists in all in different drawing competitions and proud to say The Pretentious Artists of the Literary Cafe scored a big surprise First Place.

Above is Michael Salinger shouting out instructions as he emcees the event. Look for the special page of photos on the blog.

Portrait at the Lit

I've missed quite a few Fridays at the Lit over the last month or so but here's a new sketch after 2 hours (left a little earlier than usual). The is Michael B who has posed for us maybe 5 times now. On the left is the latest and on the right is about 3 years old back when all i did was pencil or charcoal.

Portrait Study

The owners of the Literary are out of town so we ended up drawing at Tim's Manly Pad. Tim has a pretty cool art collection of local artists plus a ton of his art all over the place. This is RJ, who lives right across the street and came over to pose. He was rock solid for the full 3 hours. With the lighting at Tim's there were some striking shadows on RJ which makes the subject much more interesting to draw.

This was mostly charcoal with some light touches of color and highlight using pastel pencil.

Portrait Sketch

I missed out on drawing Laurel live on Friday, so Tim sent me a few photos to work from. Mostly charcoal with some touches of pastel. First time drawing on orange paper out of my pad. Gotta try them all!
